"Stars and Shadows" is one of the novella ideas I have been kicking around. Unlike "Myskatonia" and "Phylactery", "Stars and Shadows" is mostly science fiction rather than fantasy. The story revolves around the Narrator getting stranded in a distant solar system known as "Kyrie" which has a total of 12 sentient species. Obviously the device which compels the plot is the Narrator trying to return to Earth but the project itself is to explore the alien-ness of these species.
Please bare in mind, I am pretty perfectionist about the names. I think I updated all the names to their current iterations but if I missed any let me know, I'm trying to weed that out.

Agwuallan Dait’soa Abode: Dait’soa line on the innermost planet of Benthos. Benthos is dominated by a massive ocean and some scattered tropical islands. The planet has very little tectonic activity and the islands are the work of thousands of generations of coral reefs and mangrove swamps. Despite being closest to the Sun, Benthos is not the hottest planet nor is it the smallest, losing both titles to the fourth planet Truvenya.
Biology: Dait’soa are based off Marine Iguanas in appearance and are not much different. The main difference comes in that they often walk on two legs with their bodies parallel to the ground, they have gills, are more heavily built, and they have a distinctive bony cap on their tail resembling a spike.
They are a little larger than border collies and are the smallest species by weight. They lay eggs on land. They are a chartreuse gray in coloration. There are two sexes male and female.
Benthos has stronger gravity than most planets. This makes the Dait’soa the physically strongest species in Kyrie for their size and one of the strongest overall. A thirty-pound Dait’soa can easily lift and throw more than 300 pounds if need be, stronger members can even go as far as 600.
Culture: Like most Kyrites, the Dait’soa have a kind of worship of the Antecessors. They live in tribes which function as extended family groups. They regularly farm algae and various types of fish.
Of all the Kyrites, the Dait’soa are the most outspoken advocates of peace. Ironically, they are the least technologically sophisticated. This is in part because Benthos itself is not suitable for advanced architecture or anything of permeance due to the ocean and sandy foundation to everything.
Despite this, the Dait’soa do have an awareness of the rest of Kyrie surpassing most of their neighbors. Most knowledge of advanced technology is passed down orally and acted on only when utterly needed. However, most of Kyrie is not ready for peace and so the Dait’soa wait patiently for the rest of the system to catch up.
One species the Dait’soa do have an alliance with are the Hyun’nai Auldous. They share a love of martial arts as well as a shared history of oppression through the Shay’ivye Auldous. Of course, the Hyun’nai have yet to give up their obsession with piracy making their alliance more economic than political. Thus, the Dait’soa receive most of their technology from the Hyun’nai

Hyun’nai AuldousAbode: Although they evolved, and subsequently inhabited, into a distinct species on planet Hyun’nai-Ku’u’un; they are unrelated to any indigenous life form on that planet. Hyun’nai-Ku’u’un is the third smallest planet in Kyrie. It has a single continent with some scattered islands. The environment is a semi-temperate rainforest like the redwood forest. Biology: The Hyun’nai are a member of the same genus as the Shay’ivye Auldous so their biology naturally overlaps considerably. Differences between the two comes by way of phenotype, Hyun’nai are tall and slender while Shay’ivye are shorter and much burlier in appearance. Hyun’nai have horns which curve backwards while Shay’ivye horns go straight up and corkscrew. Furthermore, Hyun’nai are red furred with silver banding while Shay’ivye are brown with blonde banding. Auldous are more mammalian in appearance they are covered in fur and feed their young milk. They are humanoid in terms of hip and body alignment; their feet even resemble humans although they only have eight toes [two toes became merged together due to inbreeding during the species' evolution]. They have two pairs of arms, a larger upper pair with four fingers to a hand and a smaller lower pair with only three fingers to a hand. Their faces look like a wolf-fish and betray what seems to be a recent leap from an aquatic environment. Their nostrils are set high on the head between the eyes (there is no nose to speak of) and the ears are internal with the horns just above the ears. These horns resemble those of a goat complete with banding. Their backs are covered in long quills. All Auldous can run on all sixes but prefer bipedal movement when not in battle. Both Auldous are known for their hermaphroditism, having genitalia of both sexes. Naturally, an Auldous will go through a male and female cycle once a year (they only develop breasts when pregnant). Hyun’nai, however, are so self-disciplined that they can regulate this cycle. This allows them to choose which partner is the mother and which is the father or if there are no children at all. If not in a cycle, the genitalia remain inactive preventing pregnancy. After carrying the young for four months in the womb, Auldous will lay two to four eggs which will hatch approximately a month and a half later. Culture: Hyun’nai and Shay’ivye culture are as different as night and day. Starting with marriage, Hyun’nai marriages comprises two individuals who have decided to enter a long-term or permanent partnership with the expectation of raising each other’s offspring. Although they are a benevolent and honorable species, the Hyun’nai have a cultured centered around piracy and stealing. This stems from their origin as a penal colony for the Primal Auldous species. When the main Auldous civilization collapsed [due to their inability to repair Antecessor technology], the penal colony on Hyun’nai-Ku'u'un was left to its own devices. As the population grew and split, the population became increasingly reliant upon stealing resources from one another to survive. Ironically, the ideal of justice came in portraying one's self as innocent. In this way, the Hyun’nai are renowned for scapegoating others for crimes they know themselves to have committed [but would obviously never admit to]. These crimes are usually stealing never physically or emotionally damaging crimes such as rape or murder as these are still seen as sin. Hyun’nai are also fond of self-discipline [as this helps in lying] in the form of martial arts. At age 10, a young Hyun’nai is abducted from its parents. From there, they are forced to survive on their own by hunting and stealing. If they are caught and found guilty, they are whipped. At age 18, the youngling is treated to a feast by the village elders. As it turns out, the feast is spiked with laxatives and they are soon bound before the entire village and pelted with rotten food and insults. This culminates in the severing of a knuckle from the lower left hand's small finger. The wound is then stuffed with salt and the youngling is left to sit for two days without food or water. This ceremony is known as the "Sanctuary of Laughter" [for irony sake]. If the youngling shows ANY emotion during the ceremony after the eating whatsoever, they are considered a failure and are given the chance to repeat twice more at random intervals in the next two years. If failing again after the third time, they are stripped of a finger on three hands and forbidden to reproduce and treated as a pariah. If successful, the youngling is granted adult status and allowed to participate fully in Hyun’nai society. They enjoy hunting and are, ironically, strong advocates of peace throughout Kyrie even though certain individuals still rob other planets. They have a 'brotherhood' with the Dait'soa whom they share many cultural traits with. Artwork: www.deviantart.com/steekira/art/Hyun-nai-Commission-for-HokuRyu-825777048

Shay’ivye Auldous Abode: Shay’ivye are indigenous to planet Auldousia. Auldousia consists mostly of mountain ranges and savannah grasslands. There is little water [although by no means a desert, simply no oceans more like very, very large rivers] although existing bodies of water are very deep. There was more water, but tectonic activity flushed it into the rivers, a kind of drain, leading to more land. Auldousia is the largest habited planet in Kyrie.
Biology: The Shay’ivye are of the same genus as the Hyun’nai and, to the untrained eye, can look near identical. Shay’ivye are about a foot shorter but weigh approximately fifty to ninety pounds more. They are not fatter or stronger but are more heavily built with thicker bones and muscles.
Like all Auldous they have faces like a Wolf-fish with nostrils between/above the eyes but no defined nose. They have horns and those on a Shay’ivye resemble those of an African Bongo but with more banding and corkscrewing. They have four arms and six legs. Differing from the Hyun’nai, the Shay’ivye have five toes to each foot. This is because the Shay’ivye had more genetic diversity in their evolution. Shay’ivye are brown fur with blonde banding.
Auldous are hermaphroditic and left to their own devices will go through a cycle once a year where their male and female genitalia are active. This helps prevent unwanted pregnancy. While the Hyun’nai regulate their cycles through willpower, the Shay’ivye undergo a natural rhythm after matrimony. As with the Hyun’nai, Shay’ivye do not develop breasts unless that individual is pregnant, and these disappear after weaning.
Pregnancies last three and a half months and then the young gestate externally in eggs for about two months. The reason for this difference with the Hyun’nai is unclear. Most Shay’ivye lay one to three eggs in a pregnancy.
Culture: Shay’ivye marriage is unique in Kyrie in that it involves three partners rather than two. During the marriage, reproductive cycles become aligned so that each partner has a turn being each gender with each partner although most of the year, the Auldous is androgynous and nonreproductive. An example of the lineup is male-female-neuter, female-neuter-male, neuter-male-female, et cetera. This provides maximum genetic diversity.
Shay’ivye are a species of barbarians who enjoy nothing more than combat and war. The war and violence do not need material gain. Rather it's for personal or familial glory and, most commonly, for fun. When not invading each other, the Shay’ivye will invade other planets and abduct other species for gladiatorial combat. This has earned them a very bad reputation amongst the Kyrites.
With technology, the Shay’ivye are surprisingly advanced and are on par with the Merindnyu and Bugstein for the most advanced [active] species in Kyrie. Although as a culture, the Shay’ivye are sometimes very dim. They have difficulty understanding lies and they have a very high opinion of themselves, leading them to view other species as inferior. They are especially discriminatory towards the Hyun’nai, whom they see as animals masquerading as 'people'.

Merindnyu Abode: The Merindnyu are the first of three sentient species native to the planet of Truvenya. Truvenya consists of an ocean and a single continent divided into a tropical rainforest (like the Amazon) on the outside, a vast salty desert in the interior, with a semi-hollow mountain range dividing them. The Merindnyu make their home in the first biome.
Biology: Merindnyu are almost identical in body plan to Earth shrimp with key exceptions. Their exoskeleton is covered in cyan feathers with black jaguar-like spots which allow them to blend into the vegetation, their tail is skinny and prehensile (as they are an arboreal species), they have a bulbous crest sticking out from the back of their skull, and their eyes are described as “eerily human”.
They have ten legs. The first three pairs end in two fingered and one thumbed hands which are “knuckle walking” (like apes) whereas the back legs are end in three opposable toes but are flat. Although the Merindnyu usually scuttle around on all ten legs they will often rear onto their back legs in conversation. Their ears look like a cat’s.
Merindnyu have two sexes and live in vast cities built in trees. They give birth to live young. They live in group marriages and children are raised communally. But their most important trait is their neurological nature which will be addressed in culture.
The Merindnyu share a taxonomic family with the Ro’oanex and are in the same phylum as the Leksilo’eped. They share a unique lung structure where they possess breathing through two small holes on their back rather than the mouth. This lets air directly go to the lungs rather than transverse the esophagus.
Culture: Merindnyu worship the Antecessors and their social structures are near identical to contemporary western culture. They do not believe in the soulfulness of non-Merindnyu and so while they will aid other races, there is always a subtext of antipathy. They are the most technologically advanced species in Kyrie alongside the two Auldous and the Bugstein. Merindnyu culture revolves around reincarnation.
By age 20, a young Merindnyu is expected to have finished their education and pursued their own unique vocational/academic scholarship. At this point, they are entered into a special institution called the 'Mnagogogloloch'. Here, the youth is partnered with a dying Merindnyu whom, upon completion of their last rites and their affairs being set in order, transfers their memories into the younger body.
This process renders the youth into a coma for close to a week; which is why the youth must binge eat for a month beforehand. While in the coma, the memories of the elder Merindnyu become established in the mind of the youth in addition to the youth's memories. Their personalities become intertwined and a new individual is created.
Although refusing this union is generally frowned upon, it is permissible. Conversely, allowing an elder to die before their memories are transferred [even if the elder dying itself makes the decision] is considered a grave sin. Mentally ill and 'suicidal' individuals are forcibly transferred to an individual known as the "Grere-tre'n". The Grere-tre'n has existed for millennia and only become more disturbed with age.
Memories between bodies are filtered through personality of the newest body. But with each passing body, the permeance of older memories gets weaker and weaker. For example, a Merindnyu can barely remember a hundred lives ago.

Leksilo’epedAbode: As mentioned, there are three biomes on the single continent on Truvenya, tropical rainforest, mountains, and desert, the Leksilo’eped inhabit the latter. The desert is the hottest and driest habited region in Kyrie. The reason is the inversion of why the rainforest is the dampest. Rain comes from the oceans and is blocked almost completely by the high mountains, this stopping the rain. The Leksilo’eped are the only nomadic sentient species. Chasing the growing crops from season to season from northern to southern hemisphere. They also mate near the great salt sea in the north. Biology: The Leksilo’eped are very distantly related to the Merindnyu and Ro'oanex whom they share planet Truvenya with. Their appearance is based off a combination of a kangaroo, a parasaurolophus, and an opabinia. Their bodies resemble kangaroos as they hop around the desert. Leksilo’eped hands and feet also resemble a kangaroo, although they have opposable thumbs, as do their tails. Leksilo’eped three long crests like a parasaurolophus’ but they jut from the front of the skull and curve upward from the forehead. There are three almond shaped eyes in a row. These eyes are brown with white borders but otherwise completely consistent in color (no visible irises, no pupils, et cetera). The ears look like a cat. While the Merindnyu and Ro’oanex lungs feature minor orifices to breathe through, the Leksilo’eped lungs end in long tubes protruding from the back. There most striking feature is their trunk. The trunk is usually kept in a pouch in the chest region being wrapped around the neck. Superficially this might appear to choke them but recall that the respiratory system is not called connected to the head. The trunk is pink but tipped in a three-jawed beak. The trunk is always dripping in liquid. The trunk, besides in the consumption and swallowing of food, as a smelling organ like a snake’s tongue. Like the Merindnyu, the Leksilo’eped are beset by a unique neurology which will be elaborated in culture. Culture: Leksilo’eped family structures are slightly different than humanity’s. Children are expected to live with their mothers both as live in servants and apprentices. Marriage is unheard of and sperm is donated as an economic agreement for 15% of the child’s profits. At age 30, these agreement ends, and the child can keep the totality of their wages. Leksilo’eped worship the Antecessors. Although nomadic, the Leksilo’eped are well known for helping to plant the vegetation for the following years. They send approximately half the year in the north before migrating south for the other half. Traditionally, Leksilo’eped birth their young near the Great Salt Lake in the north. Coitus and associated contracts are conducted in the South. The name Leksilo’eped translates to “Mind-Mind” which illustrates their neurology perfectly. The desert of Truvenya faces a thin ozone not unlike the atmosphere over Antarctica. This makes this desert the single hottest inhabited surface region in Kyrie. The Leksilo’eped devised a unique solution to keep cool: have multiple brains. As with other sentient creatures, the brain is most active organ in the body and produces excess heat. By having an extra brain, the Leksilo’eped simply swap control of the body midday. Of course, each brain houses a distinct consciousness hence the name “Mind-Mind”. Each consciousness has an eight-hour shift of activity and 16 hours of sleeping; thus, one consciousness is often called the “Morning Mind” and the other called “Evening Mind”. They have a vague dream-like memory of their counterpart’s experiences. Each mind has a distinct personality, quirks, preferences, and, in some cases, even health. Sometimes these minds can even have differing vocations. Although they are capable of disagreeing, Leksilo’eped rarely have real conflict within themselves. When this does happen both minds can become active at the same time and vocally argue with one another. These can only be resolved through intense meditation and external arbitration.

Ro’oanex Abode: The Ro’oanex are the third and final sentient species of planet Truvenya. They inhabit the vast cave system beneath the mountains dividing the desert and rainforest. The cave system is warm through the hot sun and constant rainfall. Like how bat guano is the primary source of new nutrients being brought into the ecosystem, so to are analogous organisms on Truvenya. The Ro’oanex take the tier at the top of the food chain but function also as scavengers and herbivores (or fungi-vores rather).
Biology: The Ro’oanex are closely related to the Merindnyu although they are much more heavily built. They only have a large ridge of feathers running down their hunched back. Their bodies are covered in an eggshell-textured skin. Their tail is long and flat.
Unlike the Merindnyu, the Ro’oanex walk on their palms not the back of their hands. They can adhere to rocky surfaces like a gecko.
Ro’oanex lack eyes and have a melon organ in their place which aids in echolocation; they also have very large ears. Their fingernails are very long and then and used for detecting vibrations.
Culture: Like their fellow Truvenyans, The Ro’oanex have a very peculiar neurology. The Ro’oanex have a singular consciousness prevailing their entire species. This should not be thought of as a hive mind as depicted in science fiction. Rather, it is a single mind with many bodies.
This is so extraordinary that the Ro’oanex refers to itself in the first person (I statements) rather than second (We statements). The Ro’oanex even conceives of Ro’oanex as its personal name and interprets “The Ro’oanex” as impersonal and offensive. Although both males and females exist, Ro’oanex seems to refer to itself in the masculine; this is likely a result of Byron’s ring rather than a literal “Masculinity vs. Feminine” issue.
Ro’oanex, like Merindnyu, are marsupials. This, at one point, leads the protagonist to question if Ro’oanex is pregnant with itself. Ro’oanex confirms this time to be the case but responds that the first four years (including fetal development) are “a little like a computer loading; the machine is there but the software has yet to make sense of itself. Thus, to act as a fetus or an infant is abrupt or very slow.”
Ro’oanex has been around for a few thousand years and is one of the wisest characters in the novel. Because of his age and many bodies and generations, sex has very little meaning to him. Similarly, there is NO social stratification within him. The bodies typically live solitary lives only coming together to mate and stay together for child rearing. Of all the species in Kyrie, Ro’oanex has the most animalistic lifestyle, he has no architecture, no religion, and no agriculture.
Historically, Ro’oanex is one of the younger Kyrites. His first memories come from being raised by one of the Merindnyu. Before this, Ro’oanex only has scattered memories of and suspects it to be “because I had no language, I had no way of comprehending my surroundings beyond the moment.” The Merindnyu assumed the orphan Ro’oanex to be a deformed member of her species naming him, Bayyameen, and raised him as her own child.
Like his fetal and infant states, Ro’oanex was not able to immediately comprehend his other bodies. His mother disregarded his ‘visions’ as fantasies and so Ro’oanex thought likewise. When the Mnnaglololoch came, Ro’oanex was unable to house the memories of a Merindnyu which effectively destroyed the memories. For this “crime”, Ro’oanex was sentenced to the Grere’tren only to be determined he could not be transferred. Bayyameen was titled “Ro’oanex” or the “Anomaly”. Ro’oanex was sentenced to death not just for murder but being a crime against nature.
Not long after, Ro’oanex was sprung from prison by his adoptive sister (a Priestess of Initiation who assisted with memory transfer) and the two fled to the mountains. Here, they located a dead Ro’oanex which he initially interpreted to be a parent, but he then called to mind memories of dying that specific death. Reaching the desert, Ro’oanex and his sister encountered the Leksilo’eped who attempted to aid him understand himself. With help from both his sister and an elder Leksilo’eped, Ro’oanex came into near full awareness of himself. But combined with the heat, Ro’oanex suffered a stroke before mindlessly wandering in the desert. He died a few hours before his sister came upon him but with this death, the barrier was finally broken and Ro’oanex became cognizant of his many selves throughout Truvenya.
Along her way back, his sister was greeted by some of the many bodies of Ro’oanex who thanked her gratuitously for her companionship. But Ro’oanex did not want to return to the Merindnyu, citing their continued abuse of him. In order to prevent his sister being labeled an accomplice and to have the Merindnyu leave him alone forever, he presented himself as a savage barbarian and abductor of his sister.
In all, Ro’oanex does care deeply for his fellow Kyrites but is deeply afraid of them. He maintains an isolationist lifestyle.
When the Protagonist arrives, Ro’oanex is convinced to act on his curiosity and one of his bodies accompanies the Protagonist when he leaves. After leaving orbit, Ro’oanex suffers a seizure of sorts before realizing his connection to himself has been severed. Traveling to Yi’vaan, Ro’oanex becomes increasingly paranoid before degrading into a feral mindset and turns on the Bugstein and the Protagonist.

Bugstein Abode: The Bugstein are the dominant species of planet Yi’vaan.and live in a society with the Rummy. Yi’vaan is based off Anchorage Alaska in environment being a temperate swamp. Bugstein, along with Rummies, are found across the planet. Yi’vaan is a moon to the gas giant Qyndaaryi.
Biology: Physically speaking, Bugstein are extremely like centaurs and dragonflies. Their hooves are based from deer though rather than a horse’s. They are covered in porous green skin. They have a stubby but medium-length bobtail. Along the back of their lower torso are two pairs of dragonfly wings and there is a third pair on the upper torso; their function will be described later in this topic. Their upper torso is strikingly human even with five fingers.
Their head, however, warrants its own explanation. Superficially, it resembles a human but on closer inspection it’s closer to pac-man. The eyes are larger than a human’s by almost 250% and are pitch black with no discernible traits inside like irises or pupils. There is no nose. The mouth lacks cheeks and the lips are nondescript marching the hue and texture of the surrounding tissue. There are teeth but they don’t appear to have much biological function. Bugstein are notorious for one thing: their perpetual smile. This smile is so named because it resembles a human smile. But because of the lack of cheeks and inconsequential lips, the Bugstein are stuck in a perpetual smile, being unable to form other facial expressions. The ears are simple holes and barely visible. There is a pair of segmented antennae above the eyes.
Bugstein grow with age and the oldest specimens being over 16 feet in height and 30 feet in length.
Bugstein are more plant-like than other Kyrites. Their wings are solar panels, like leaves. Sunlight provides the Bugstein with 65% of their diet. The other 35% comes from bacteria and water. Bugstein consume the bacteria which decays plant matter in the water. To this end, Bugstein have massive submerged decay farms for expressly this purpose. Water, however, makes up a minimal proportionately part of the diet excreted through the skin.
To this end, Bugstein can be compared to Baleen Whales. They absorb water through their skin and filter the bacteria before spewing the unnecessary water back out as a kind of sweat. This sweat, in turn, helps to distribute water throughout the ecosystem.
Bugstein are thought to have evolved from an aquatic species. They sought safety on land from predators (land species are rare on Yi’vaan). Without competition or predation, the Bugstein achieved massive sizes. [This seems to indicate Yi’vaan is a relatively younger planet compared to its sister planets]. By the time other species made landfall, the Bugstein were simply too large to be bothered.
Bugstein lack sexes and are hermaphroditic, they impregnate themselves and unwillingly at that (Bugstein are terrified at the concept of self-mutilation). Like their ancestors, Bugstein lay their eggs and remain indifferent to their offspring’s fate. In one of the plot twists, Rummy are revealed to be juvenile Bugstein and their nature will be discussed in their own thread.
Culture: The name “Bugstein” is not actually the species’ name. Instead, it is the result of the Protagonist coming across a stray Bugstein before encountering the civilization. Noting the massive size and green skin, the Protagonist notes the similarity to Frankenstein’s Monster christening the species “a kind of Bugstein”. Unfortunately, Byron’s Ring takes this as the Protagonist’s word for the species thus translating the species’ true name to ‘Bugstein’.
[If you had never encountered a giraffe and called it an elephant, you would conceive of a giraffe as an elephant even if someone tried to correct you; Byron’s ring acts as a telepathic spellcheck, translating the real name to Bugstein regardless of the Protagonist’s efforts to hear the correct name].
Bugstein are well-known for their feud with the Reaptilite and their conflict spilled onto the other planets of Kyrie. Their respective planets, Yi’vaan and Reaptealos, are in an intersecting orbit which causes the two planets to be as close to one another as moons at least twice a year.
This species asexual and foodless nature lends itself to the Bugstein having far more spare time on their hands. Bugstein are intensely materialistic and devote their whole lives to collecting money. In a plot twist, the Bugstein and Rummy are revealed to be the same species with the former adults and the latter juvenile.
Bugstein have little choice in their self-fertilization and lay up to eight in a clutch. Their ancestors leave the eggs buried to fend for themselves likewise, Bugstein sell their offspring off to a Rummy farm for financial gain. Bugstein have the adage “the only thing worse than a dumb Rummy is a bum Rummy.” Rummy farms educate Rummy before selling them off into servitude.
Despite their disregard for their offspring, Bugstein live in a nigh crime-less society. They abhor stealing (stealing especially), murder, and lying. Bugstein are buried with the totality of their financial earning and preventing anyone else from taking the profits.
Profit is gained in the same way as humans as an exchange of goods and/or services. The Bugstein have the perplexing belief that the Antecessors achieved their success through great capitalism.

Rummy Abode: The Rummy share their planet, Yi’vaan, with the Bugstein. Yi’vaan is based from Anchorage, Alaska in terms of environment. It is a large temperate swamp with a vast forest. Yi’vaan has an intersecting orbit with Reaptealos and the two cross paths two to three times a year.
Biology: As a part of a plot twist, the Bugstein and Rummy are revealed to be the same species. Rummy are similar in appearance to caterpillars although they the basic bodies of Bugstein. Initially, they propel themselves with nodes on their belly but as the limbs become more formed, they move along with these. The body becomes harder and firmer less squishy; more Bugstein and less caterpillar.
Rummy are red with yellow eyes and covered in wooly fur to keep warm, which they shed later. If left to their own devices, Rummy sleep and eat most of the time and are nocturnal. Unlike adults, Rummy are capable of eating material food which allows their mass to expand so much more quickly than Bugstein. The more Rummy eats, the quicker they can metamorphose into a Bugstein. They are usually about five feet in length and 200 pounds.
When they metamorphose, the digestive system is absorbed back into the body. Providing the final push into a Bugstein. As they age, the Rummy transitions from red to a brackish grey before assuming the green of a Bugstein.
Culture: Rummy hatch into a life of servitude and indoctrinated That metamorphosis is a blessing imparted only to the best of workers. They are educated by the Bugstein who bought the eggs but more as a commodity than education as equals. When their Teacher feels the Rummy are sufficiently educated, he will sell them at market.
Bugstein use Rummy as source of slave labor before granting freedom when a Rummy becomes a Bugstein. Bugstein are notorious of depriving food from Rummy to prevent metamorphosis. After metamorphosis, young Bugstein are typically so indoctrinated that they accept the norms of Bugstein without question.

ReaptiliteAbode: Reaptilite are indigenous to the planet of Reaptealos. Reaptealos is a moon to a gas giant (Qyndaar) but perpetually caught in shadow of the planet, eclipsing the Kyrie Sun. Thus, looking up at the sky is dangerous while the planet is caught in a perpetual twilight. Reaptealos is based off Bend, Oregon for its environment. Biology: Reaptilite seem to have a history passing their status as a species. They are descended from a small species thriving as a pest amongst the Antecessor society. Reaptilite maintained incredibly quick reproductive rate, so each extermination resulted in .01% of the species remaining, this remainder evolved. After several generations, the species evolved large enough to start feeding on the Antecessor livestock and pets, only to be eradicated again. They bounced back again from the brink of extinction. This became such a problem that the Antecessors finally left. The Pseudo-Antecessors (Nomagry) then attempted to colonize Reaptealos only to encounter a similar problem. Their factories caused intense pollution, and this propelled the Reaptilite into their contemporary form. They are known for having three sexes (male, female, and posiq) and six genders (Buck, Female, Jocust, Rogue, Eunuch, Posiq). On average, male Reaptilite stand about 7 feet tall whereas females and posiq are usually four feet tall. They are bird like in build and are covered in wiry fur which is an indigo-blue coloration with black stripes. Their heads have three mandibles with two on the bottom (resembling an ant’s) and a third from the forehead like a rhinoceros beetle. They have six eyes: two forward, two on the left, and two in the right giving them binocular vision in three directions. The eyes resemble those of a cat. The head itself is bald and, resting, is blue with yellow eyes but when agitated will turn purple with orange eyes. Their basic body resembles a theropod dinosaur. They have six digits on each limb: three fingers and three thumbs. Their hips are large to accommodate their jumping ability but also to counterbalance their heavy head with their immense tail. In fact, their tail is typically considered to be their trademark being uncannily prehensile and making up almost three fifths is the entire length. It is skinny but can extend to some extent and is usually kept arched over the back. This tail is tipped in a snake-like mouth complete with teeth, tongue, and is capable of mild vocalization. This tail is used for hunting but has another purpose unique to the Reaptilite: reproduction. The tail also serves as genitalia with males and females locking teeth to exchange bodily fluids. This is also why, incidentally, many young Reaptilite smell of rotten flesh because the vagina they pass through often has cavities (new teeth are always being grown and shed). The male will often slam his tail down a female to make sure his seed reaches the ovaries. Side note: males can have multiple tails. After an unclear point in gestation, the female will abruptly jettison the fetus. Usually, this act of vaginal vomiting is done into the tail-maw of the posiq who carries the offspring to term. This is done because the Reaptilite body has such an aversion to foreign things that the fetus is treated with hostility by the immune system. Along with the DNA of a third parent, a single family of Reaptilite can produce a much greater genetic variety than any bisexual species (like humans) or monosexual (like the Bugstein). However, male Reaptilite are known for their sexual appetites and even though a posiq can bare multiple offspring, they can run out of room. Consequently, Reaptilite hives are often lined with regurgitated fetuses. After approximately seventy days of gestation, the posiq will vomit offspring who are small and grub like. These offspring are nourished by milk provided by the posiq and carrion. In less than two years, a Reaptilite is capable of reproduction. Each gender has a unique role in the hive structure: Rexes are dominant and there is only one fertile male to a hive. He holds a sexual monopoly on all individuals in the hive even those he is directly related too. They are larger than other hive members, dominated by their hormones. Rexes act in leadership and oversee all hive functions from hunting, to farming, to the nursery. Rogue males, who are exiled from the hive, are sometimes counted as their own gender. Most infant males are killed on sight unless their Posiq hides them to vie for the coveted role of Jocust. Jocust are Second in command. There is only one Jocust to the hive and she is the Posiq who bore the alpha male. Unlike other hive members, the Jocust is designed for political purposes. She represents the hive in external affairs and oversees social stratification by her son’s permission. Ironically, the Jocust are also known for inciting rebellion against the current Alpha if said alpha goes against the wants of the Jocust. She is the queen and the queen-mother. Females are the hunters of the group. This either done by hunting wild animals or, in more civilized hives, livestock. In addition to their function as hunters, they are the soldiers of the hive. Alongside the Posiq, the Females are the most numerous gender/sexes in the hive. Posiq are the child rearers and caregivers within the hive. They occasionally engage in more domestic tasks even forming a kind of pseudo-matrimony with the female whose eggs they carry. Eunuchs are castrated species members (their tail is severed), they can be any sex but are usually male whom the Rex has taken mercy on. The castration is usually done shortly after birth but can occur later. Without the tail, the male is unable to produce the necessary hormones for proper development. They become clumsy, their fur grows in sparse patches and falls out, their voices are shrill even for Reaptilite, and their colors are dulled. Rogues, or males not bound to a hive, come into existence by one of two means. In the first, the male is smuggled out by their posiq to avoid being killed or mutilated by the Rex. Alternatively, the Rogue comes about when the Rex dies and the remaining male offspring vie for power, the losers, if they survive, become Rogues. Rogues are even more violent and chaotic than Rexes, although not as intelligent or as strong. Rogues are imbalanced because, unlike the Rex, they have no outlet to their hormones. This lends itself to occasional random bodily developments like horns or tumors not found in other Reaptilite. They are extremely violent and view other males as antagonists but will often bid their time before launching an attack. They are known for being feral both hunting and killing stray Reaptilite who wander into their territory. Culture: The Reaptilite species is the most reviled amongst all the Kyrites and they exist for the sole purpose of perpetuating the Hive. Despite this, the Reaptilite have one of the most detailed histories even going into details before their existence as a distinct species. Reaptilite see their origins as a small pest, like raccoons, living in the shadow of a vast Antecessor colony. The Antecessors left research outposts throughout Kyrie, but it is only on Reaptealos that they established true colonies. This is thought to be because the Antecessors were a nocturnal species and Reaptealos is perpetually caught in night. The Antecessors eventually took to exterminating the species as it prayed on their pets. All but .01% of the pest species died out. At an unknown point and for unknown reasons, the Antecessors left Kyrie. A few thousand years later, a second species colonized Reaptealos along with Yi’vaan. They encountered the same pest problem, but the species had evolved from their encounter with the Antecessors becoming a far more dangerous predator. Again, the species was exterminated to .01%. These second colonists were the Nomagry but the Bugstein and Reaptilite later confused them with the Antecessors leading other species to blur the two species of colonizers. Eventually, the Nomagry’s crude fossil fuel technology led to global warming which, for a Nomagry especially, is bad. This led to the Nomagry to abruptly leave the planet with their colonies behind. By the time of the Nomagry departure, the Reaptilite had nearly completed their evolution. A few generations later, the Reaptilite had adapted to their changed atmosphere and even preferred it to clean air. The Bugstein would arrive and the Reaptilite would begin their species’ unending feud as the Bugstein attempted to colonize and mine Reaptealos for their own gain. Coupled with abductions by the Primal Auldous, the Reaptilite began to resent anything not native to their planet. This led to many skirmishes as the Reaptilite attempted preemptive strikes across various worlds. They correctly surmised the toxicity of their atmosphere towards other species. The Reaptilite committed resource en masse to poisoning their neighbors. This had the unintended effect of uniting Kyrie against them and their colonies. While the Reaptilite off Reaptealos were obliterated, those on planet had their technology destroyed. For while the Reaptilite knew how to USE technology they did not know how to BUILD it. This relates directly to Reaptilite mythology. Reaptilite know the pollution drove away the Antecessors and serves as an aversion to other Kyrites. To the Reaptilite, nothing is more important than their species and their world. Everything else is evil. Reaptilite use discarded technology to perpetuate pollution and even perform inane tasks to complete this. For instance, they manually crank gears or conveyor belts thinking this helps their goal. The symbiosis of the Reaptilite and the Kamojinn began at an unclear point. The Reaptilite use the Kamojinn as food and labor for religious duties. The Kamojinn give the Reaptilite their elderly and sick. This has the ironic consequence of making the Reaptilite one of the healthiest species in Kyrie. By keeping a healthy flock, some Reaptilite hives can enjoy the fresh meat once a week!

Kamojinn Abode: Kamojinn live on planet Reaptealos but are unrelated to any organism on the planet. They live in symbiosis with the Reaptilite and are found anywhere their partners are.
Biology: As mentioned, the Kamojinn are completely unrelated to anything on Reaptealos or Kyrie for that matter. The assumption is they are descended from the pets of the Antecessors left behind. When the Protagonist examines a skeleton, he notes that the traits are more terrestrial than anything he’s seen in Kyrie, even (dino)saurian. He deduces the Kamojinn may very well be descended from a form of dinosaur. But he is interrupted before the speculation continues.
The Kamojinn have many traits consistent with domesticated animals, they are pedomorphic, small, and with coloration that serves no adaptive purpose. They are humanoid in build but are covered in downy feathers. They have a slight webbing between the toes and fingers which while pudgier are otherwise human in appearance. Their faces resemble ducks but in closer inspection are closer to duck-billed dinosaurs.
Despite their subservient lifestyle, Kamojinn are among the most intellectually capable species in Kyrie. However, thousands of years of selective breeding by the Reaptilite seems to have abolished any desire to better themselves or change their social stature. This has the unusual consequence of making the Kamojinn incredibly pacifistic.
They lay eggs and live in monogamous pairs.
Culture: Kamojinn live in symbiosis with the Reaptilite, although the latter is dominant, and the two share a religion/worldview. They handle the technological and agricultural operations of the Reaptilite although they do not understand the technology they work with. It’s likely because they have no context and the technology is so degraded.
The Kamojinn also serve as a livestock for the Reaptilite. Their elderly and ill are weeded out. A Kamojinn’s specific job is predetermined by their father’s job. That said, their lives are often pinpointed to a precise level by the Reaptilite. At age seven, Kamojinn are traded between hives. Some Reaptilite even trade Kamojinn after (the Kamojinn’s) wedlock. This helps to prevent emotional attachment between the slaves. Most horrifically, Kamojinn are culled after age 25 (birth-transfer-matrimony-matrimony-death, along seven-year intervals). This aids in population control and is demonstrating by giving scarification bands along the forearms. Three years after second matrimony and a year after the 24th band, the Kamojinn is ceremonially executed and consumed by the Reaptilite.
The Kamojinn have the capacity to become the smartest species in Kyrie, why do they continue this lifestyle? There are a few reasons.
First, the Kamojinn firmly believe there is no place for rebellion; with the Reaptilite, they are given food, shelter, care, and their needs are completely met. The Reaptilite (almost) never kill a Kamojinn out of turn unless there is some sort of criminal activity. Neither is their physical or emotional abuse.
Second, the Kamojinn have undergone much selective breeding. This has produced a species which, while immensely intelligent, is naïve and docile with no desire to better themselves. This relates directly for the third and most important reason.
Lastly is the way Reaptilite treat rebellion, they treat it as a tumor. Rebellious Kamojinn are swiftly exterminated with no survivors. If the youth are younger than three, they can live. But the adults are killed before their children who are covered with their parents’ blood and made to feast with the Reaptilite. The trauma of these encounters swiftly deters any notion of rebellion.
So then, why don’t the Kamojinn join with flocks from other hives? Simple. The entire lifecycle of the Kamojinn is scrutinized. They are never without a shepherd close by to guard them and they are never allowed to venture from the property.

Nomagry Abode: Nomagry are the final species in Kyrie and live on the planet of Ecksphawno. This planet is so inhospitable, and superficially lifeless, that no other Kyrite knows they exist although Antecessor writing makes it clear they knew of the Nomagry.
Ecksphawno is a planet with ice covering 97% of the surface. The Kyrites interpret the planet to not have an atmosphere, but the ice IS the atmosphere. This is how distant Ecksphawno is from the Kyrie Sun, that even the sky froze.
Conversely, the (actual) surface of rife with hot water geysers which, while to extreme to live near, comb out vast areas for life to exist in the most unlikely of places: the ceiling.
Collectively called “the Ceilingscape”, this is the major biome of Ecksphawno. The Ceilingscape is completely devoid of external light, only bioluminescent organisms and will-o’-wisps provide light. Instead, the biome feeds from the heat from the geysers as the base of the food chain. Chief among these thermophiles are “kelp” and “heat grass” which dangle from the ceiling. Some are huge, others short.
But how can an entire ecosystem survive in an upside-down environment under a glacier??!! The creatures of Ecksphawno have many adaptations to aid in this task. They have no blood and extract oxygen directly from the air to their cells, thus there is no concern of blood pooling. Second, they all excrete a substance known as Ecksphawnogin.
Ecksphawnogin is a hydrophilic substance which allows the creature to adhere to the Ceilingscape by selective electrical impulses, the Ecksphawnogin is made hydrophobic or hydrophilic, allowing creatures to strut effortlessly across the ceiling.
Biology: In many ways, Nomagry represent a typical organism of Ecksphawno. They lack blood and generally lack specialized cells. Specialized cells include membrane, brain, hearing, and eyes. This makes them, in many ways, comparable to single-called organisms.
Nomagry have a single bulbous eye which sits on the end of a stalk. Hearing cells make up a small structure analogous in function to ears. The brain merely acts as a storage unit for memories and information. All cells can assist with digestion, neural activity, temperature regulation, respiratory, and even reproductive functions.
The Nomagry absorb food like an ameba then each cell takes turn distributing nutrition like a conveyor built. The ‘mouth’ in the membrane can assist in this function but is rarely used. Rather, the mouth is what is known as a “vocal pouch” and can inhale and exhale to produce the phonemes necessary for language.
In other ways, Nomagry are like turtles, they are having eight tendrils each with two fingers. These can be extracted at any time into the body. When the tendrils are extended, the body takes on a slug-like shape; while the limbs are retracted, the body becomes leaner and serpentine. The Nomagry do have minor control over their dimensions [although the mass must go somewhere else so the width, length or height would change if another dimension were changed]. This evolved to help the Nomagry slither through ice tubes.
The coloration of Nomagry is a dark indigo blue. As their bodies are constantly secreting Ecksphawnogin, bioluminescent pollen often gets stuck on them producing a variety of other colors in chaotic patterns.
Unlike any other sentient species, the Nomagry reproduce through mitosis. This happens after approximately two years of life. Each “daughter” Nomagry possesses imperfect memories of their parent and their other ancestors.
Culture: Nomagry life is dominated by idealism (“beauty” as they call it). Nomagry have blotchy memories the further back in time. This has led them to the belief that the most beautiful answer must be correct. Case and point are the way the Nomagry conceive of the Antecessors.
The Nomagry are one of the more technologically advanced species in Kyrie and they established colonies on the moons of Qyndaaryi. There, they encountered ruins of the Antecessors. Realizing no other creature could build such beautiful structures, there was only one beautiful conclusion: the Nomagry themselves must have built them.
The rationale behind this relates to the historical Nomagry reliance on fossil fuels which did intense damage to the environment or 'uglied'. The Nomagry abandoned fossil fuels and extended this as analogy for why they no longer used Antecessor technology. This is an example of the "Mandela Effect".
When disputes arrive between Nomagry, their peers making the decision by pure democracy. This can be about crime, property, and history. There is no true Nomagry government. Interestingly, after mitosis, daughter Nomagry will vie for habitation rights to their parent's house.
Although they are democratic, Nomagry do not believe in the soulfulness of their peers. They routinely keep this view to themselves citing concern that their peers will turn on them. This has the interesting side effect of creating a species resentful of one another.
Architecture is immensely important, and it is how Nomagry express themselves. By harvesting Ecksphawnogin, the Nomagry sculpts the ice into new shapes, creating both elaborate structures and statues. Ironically, Nomagry build simply for the pleasure and for expression never for any practical purpose. With the ice structures, algae can grow, and this provides the Nomagry with a delicious food.
