I was just remarking on this notion of what were the best movies & TV shows of 2019
There were some decent movies but not too many great ones, the biggest movie flops in my opinion were Star Wars and Lion King, unless I'm forgetting something that was truly awful
Best movie easily goes to Alita: Battle Angel
Honorable mention for Avengers: Endgame, although it was quite good and interesting at times, I was pretty disappointed with the ending, but I'm usually disappointed by action movie endings because the bad guys always lose and most often in really stupid ways
Alita is one of the best movies ever made, hollywood should be bowing at the feet of James Cameron while the scientific community tries to figure out a way to clone him a thousand times so we can have perfect movies forever. Besides the other elements that make a movie good, pacing, cinematography, etc, The CGI in this movie is like nothing we've ever seen before, not only is it the most advanced technology ever used to create characters like this, requiring new inventions to even make it possible and beyond that, the quality of the rendering is out of this world.
Alita's hand in the movie, James Cameron likes to have these kind of shots in his movies, the proverbial "show off" scene where the CGI is directly against actual human flesh, in Avatar it's at the end when Jake is in his human body and Neytiri has to rescue him
------
As for TV shows the biggest flop of the year, at least from what I saw, has to be Watchmen, it was unwatchable garbage that has virtually nothing to do with the source material and has no redeeming qualities
I would go into detail about what I believe to be the best new show of the year, obviously The Witcher, but I think most, if not all of you have a pretty good idea of how I feel about it.
Then there's best returning show of the year and although there are quite a few shows I enjoy watching, the best return this year has to go to Netflix's other giant, Stranger Things.
It's third season was a masterpiece from start to finish, it was all but perfect, and my only real complaints are minor ones, I think the monsters need a little more character to them and they ALMOST hit the perfect note toward the end but fell just a little short. The monsters should have created everything in season 3 to give it to Eleven, not for the purpose of destroying her, if they had pulled the rug out from under the audience's feet at that precise moment, couple that with either Nancy or Jonathan dying in the hospital scene rather than everything turning out fine and this show would have achieved narrative perfection.
Edit: Almost completely forgot and had to edit this one in, worst returning show. Out of the ones I watched, this has to be Walking Dead, it's new season was so fucking pathetic almost everything was done wrong, attempted drama forced in areas with characters that we don't know or are just straight-up unlikable. This season was riddled with so many errors in virtually every area it would be easier to summarize what they did right this season than what they did wrong: Negan was what they did right, his scenes are still as iconic, eye and ear catching as ever and he's just an awesome character that you can't help but love, everything else this season was trash.
If it weren't for having watched the previous 9 seasons I would have written this show off as unwatchable garbage and not bothered with it any further, they're cashing in on a loyalty credit from me, hoping next outing has a lot more Negan and lot less of this other waste of screen time that they call "story".

As far as cinematics, this one has to go to World of Wacraft, the battle of Orgrimmar "Reckoning"

Fuckin' epic in nearly every way, this was Blizzard flexing on other game companies who can't put together a proper epic scene to save their lives.
Can't give them total credit here though, yes this cinematic is awesome, however they immediately followed it up with the worst cinematic and worst storytelling in warcraft history, I've written about it already and my blood still boils with hatred over how fucking dumb it was. They need to take whoever came up with the idea for Sylvannas' invasion of icecrown, tie them to a chair blindfolded in a poorly lit basement, preferably partially flooded and beat them over the thighs with bamboo rods.
------
Now for something I may expand on later, best scenes.
There is one that comes to mind sticking out so strongly, on my first rewatch of the season I was able to sit back and take in every detail because I wasn't as caught up in the suspense and mystery as oppose to viewing it for the first time.

This scene is stunning, everything is executed with perfect precision, it has mixed themes, it offsets the violence while at the same time leaning into it in a way that is indulging without fear and could only be summarized as true art in the best way.
